LUMC Helps the People of Haiti and Local Homeless

United Methodist Committee on Relief

UMCOR’s two relief supply warehouses asked United Methodists to provide Health Kits that can be sent to earthquake-devastated Haiti. On Sunday a afternoon LUMC prepared 100 Health Kits for the people of Haiti. Approximately 50 members came to help assemble the kits. Each kit contains a towel and washcloth, Bandaids, a toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, and nail clippers.

UPDATE June 6, 2010: During the LUMC worship service today the entire congregation of approximately 200 people prepared another 200 Health Kits, this time destined for local homeless and underpriveleged.   They will be distributed through the Sonshine Soup Kitchen, Manchester Food Pantry, and the Anne-Marie House transitional housing facility.

Supplies for the kits were purchased in bulk and a special offering was collected at each of the three worship services on Sunday morning to cover the costs. All excess funds donated are being sent directly to UMCOR for use in Haiti.

“For people who are feeling powerless in being able to help those in Haiti, providing health kits is a tangible way they can make an immediate difference,” said Kathy Kraiza, director of UMCOR’s relief supplies. She estimates that hundreds of thousands of kits will be needed in the days and months ahead.

The kits, valued at about $12 per kit, contain everything from towels and washcloths to sterile bandages and bar soap. They will be distributed to those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster.

  • The United Methodist Committee on Relief was already very active in Haiti before this week's devastating earthquake. Sadly, the Rev. Sam Dixon, top executive of UMCOR, died of injuries received after being buried in the rubble of a collapsed hotel following the earthquake.

Donations for UMCOR over and above those required for the Health Kits can be made on Sunday morning, or directly to UMCOR at this website. 100% of funds donated will go to support the relief and development efforts in Haiti - UMCOR's administrative costs are funded through our regular mission shares.
